FOR RELEASE: January 31, 2025

Sudbury will be THE place for adventure racing in July 2025, with the city hosting two exciting adventure races over the July 26-27, 2025 weekend. The thirty-hour non-stop Wilderness Traverse (WT) will challenge North America’s top adventure racers, and the inaugural Apex Adventure Challenge (AAC) will offer a fun, beginner-friendly four-hour event. Both events will challenge teams of two to four athletes with trekking, paddling & biking as they navigate unmarked courses in the Sudbury region.
One of Canada’s premier adventure race organizers since 2010, Counter Adventures founder and event director Bob Miller has always wanted to bring the WT event to the Sudbury area. “We’ve hosted all over Cottage Country and we’ve looked north to the Sudbury area for a while. You’re literally steps from exciting adventure opportunities in every direction”. Sudbury is a special place, perfect for a special year: WT is serving as the 2025 Adventure Racing World Series North America Championship. Teams from across Ontario, Canada and North America will travel to Sudbury to compete to win free entry to the 2026 Adventure Racing World Championships in France.
Sudbury’s own Dennis Legault, founder of Apex Warrior Gym has built a growing fitness community through his south end gym and by hosting a variety of trail running and obstacle events. Having participated in several WT races before (“one of the most fun things I’ve ever done”), he was excited when consulted about the race coming to Sudbury. Those discussions led to the two organizations working together to create a companion beginner-friendly race, the Apex Adventure Challenge. Perfect for everyone from experienced athletes to beginners and families who want a taste of adventure racing, creating a truly adventure-filled summer weekend in Sudbury.
Bob Miller: “When planning Wilderness Traverse for Sudbury, we wanted to connect with someone in our racing community who is local. We’re excited to work with Dennis on WT planning and to support him with this new event. The hope is having an annual Sudbury area race will help grow the sport and community”
Dennis Legault: “I’m excited to have teams come and experience the wilderness of our region. Working with experienced organizers like the Wilderness Traverse team for this new event will help create just the right kind of safe, challenging adventure I know Sudbury athletes will love”
Both events will be hosted out of Laurentian University with the exact courses, including start locations, remaining secret until race day. WT racers will start Saturday morning and AAC racers Sunday morning, with teams from both events racing towards the common finish line on Sunday afternoon. With real-time online tracking for WT, Sudbury can follow the world-class teams Saturday and then experience the sport themselves with an approachable, fun event Sunday morning.
To help racers prepare for the weekend, both events are planning info and training sessions in the coming months. Wilderness Traverse also has information about the sport and how to prepare on their website: https://www.wildernesstraverse.com/training
